Alumni Reunion

April 29, 2017

8 am: Case study review, Sperry Room

The product of months of research and interviews with faculty, students, staff, and alumni—as well as colleagues at Harvard and beyond—the bicentennial case study is a portrait of Harvard Divinity School at 200. Read the case, then share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences to help Dean Hempton set a course for HDS’s third century. Led by Derek van Bever, MDiv ’11, director of Harvard Business School’s Forum for Growth and Innovation.

8:30 am: Morning activities

Start your reunion day early with one of several offerings: a meditative morning reflection at the CSWR to center yourself for the day, a fun run from Harvard Yard to HDS to start things off on the right foot (meet on the Francis Ave. side of Andover Hall), or coffee and conversation for alumni in the ministry with faculty members from the Office of Ministry Studies in Rockefeller Hall Lounge.

9:30 am: Faculty-led classes, Andover Hall

Go back to school with sessions taught by one of three incredible HDS faculty members, who are themselves alumni: Charlie Hallisey, Diane Moore, and Matthew Potts. Full descriptions with “syllabi” will be available in April for some good ol' fashioned Harvard course “shopping” before you arrive!

12:00 pm: Alumni ceremony and Bicentennial Gomes Honors, Francis Lawn Tent

The Alumni/Alumnae Council will hold a ceremony to celebrate the HDS alumni community on the occasion of the School’s Bicentennial, including the awarding of the bicentennial year Gomes Honors.

1:00 PM: Festive reunion lunch and conversation circles, Andover Quad Tent

Join classmates from across the decades for good food and conversation. Topics will be chosen based on alumni interests, and you can voice your opinion in the registration page. Want to meet other HDS artists? Interested in political or social justice organizing? Let us know!

2:15 PM: In Conversation: The Bicentennial Gomes Honorees, Andover Quad Tent

Alumni/Alumnae Council Chairperson Christopher J. Hanson, MDiv ’10, will convene this year’s Gomes Honorees (to be announced in early March) for a moderated discussion about their time at HDS, their views on the importance of School, and their work in the world.

3:30 PM: Faculty talks, Francis Lawn Tent

Professor Cornel West and CSWR Visiting Scholar Sasha Dehghani will offer a session titled “Religion and Nonviolence: Past and Present.” Don’t miss this lively discussion.

4:30 PM: Faculty talks, Francis Lawn Tent

Professor Harvey Cox will deliver a talk titled “Whatever Happened to Secularization?” Be sure to catch this fascinating presentation.

6:00 PM: Multifaith Worship: The “a little past noon service,” Andover Chapel

Join with alumni from across eras, denominations, and traditions for a service of readings, songs, and wisdom. Akin to the weekly Noon Service held now on campus, the service will celebrate the diversity of the HDS community. All are welcome!

7:00 PM: Theological Revue & Ralph’s Pub, Andover Quad Tent

Were you a star performer in Theological Revue at HDS? Did you chat about theology and philosophy over beers at Ralph’s Pub in Divinity Hall? Attend this lively, loving birthday roast of our alma mater with songs, acts, food, and fun to close the day!
