A Message From Dean Hempton on the Passing of François Bovon
François Bovon

With a heavy heart, I write to let you know that François Bovon, Frothingham Professor of the History of Religion Emeritus at HDS, passed away Friday night (Nov. 1) peacefully in Aubonne, Switzerland, after a long illness.
François was associated with HDS for two decades. He joined us in 1993, teaching New Testament and early Christian literature, and he was chair of the New Testament Department from 1993 to 1998 and again in 2001-02.

Prior to his arrival, François served at the University of Geneva in its Divinity School, as a professor for 26 years and dean from 1976 to 1979. During his tenure at Geneva, he also enjoyed numerous visiting professorships in Switzerland and Italy.
More will be said about François's scholarly accomplishments and his lasting impact on the HDS community and in the wider world, but for now we grieve the loss of our good friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor, and we honor and celebrate his life.
We will share information on a memorial service as soon as we have details. In the meantime, please keep the Bovon family in your thoughts and prayers.

David N. Hempton
