How I've Changed

Since starting at HDS I have been able to take both my academic and ecclesiastical pursuits to the next level. I have become more confident in lecturing through my field education placements and have benefited immensely from the opportunity to study at HDS!

Memorable Moment

My most memorable moment would have to be walking on campus for the first time and attending class in person for the first time after having to spend our first academic year apart due to COVID. ...

Memorable Moment

My most memorable moments at HDS center around our yearly construction of the Sukkah for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Sharing the responsibilty for this ritual was a joyous, at times frustrating, but ultimately immensely rewarding activity. Sitting in the structure that we had lovingly labored to bring to life for festive meals, study times, and impromptu chats with classmates while friends of all denominations and religons filtered in and out engendered a deep gratitude for the unique warmth and diversity of the HDS community....

Memorable Moment

Some of my favorite moments at HDS were walking out of a long class, after discussing challenging topics and running into friends sitting outside Swartz Hall. Laying out in the sun and talking with them always boosted my mood.

Favorite Class or Professor

There's so many! I took "Witch Hunts" and "Sanctuary Ethics" with Professor Healan Gaston and both courses completely shifted the way that I understand the culture wars and moral panics that we are seeing unfold every day. My first year...

How I've Changed

Early on in my first semester at HDS in 2021, I grabbed a blank index card and made a list of goals I had for my time at HDS. The title of the list is “I’m here to…” and consists of four bullet points written in gold sharpie: 1) learn about spirituality and climate change, 2) make something to continue making something, 3) meet and learn from people who are better and smarter than me, and 4) learn to write more accessibly about religion.

I taped this list to my desk, and for the past two years, it...

Memorable Moment

I have had many memorable moments at Harvard, but having the unique opportunity to travel to Israel and participate in an archaeological dig has been the most memorable. During the trip, I fell in love with archeology while I and a few other students dug up a Hasmonean farmstead. There we found ancient nails, jars, and even a coin! During this trip, I realized that I want to understand better material culture to inform my research. In addition, I got to know my advisor and teacher, Dr. Giovanni Bazzana, on a more individual level, and...

How I've Changed

The growth I’ve experienced at HDS, both personal and academic, has been beyond anything I ever expected. My time here has taught me so much about who I am, who I want to be, and what I am capable of. This school has changed my orientation towards my own life and how I step out into and experience the world around me.

Message of Thanks

I will be forever grateful to my family and my partner for their unending support of me through this process. As my editors, my guidance counselors, my...

How I've Changed

As someone who enjoys academics but gets frustrated if it doesn't have a practical application, I feel like I've swung like a pendulum between academics and ministry practice. At first it felt like one or the other. Over time, they've become closer together, as I learn to integrate rigorous scholarship with day-to-day ministry in a congregation. I bet my congregants would say my sermons make more sense now!

Favorite Class or Professor

I've had many wonderful instructors at HDS: not...

How I've Changed

I learned to doubt myself with confidence, hold my ground with compassion, and always be open to learning with a critical mind. I also had the opportunity to face many character-building difficulties, such as rejections by doctoral programs. I testified my real compassion for learning and academia.

Memorable Moment

HDS was my dream school. Without exaggeration, I had been living in my earlier dream at HDS. So, every day was memorable at HDS. If you force me to say something, I would say...

How I've Changed

At HDS, I have met professors and peers who have inspired me tremendously. To constantly be surrounded by people passionate about their fields of study has been a blessing that has helped me grow both as a scholar and as a person. Though I have held onto the core beliefs I entered HDS with, I am now better equipped to examine my own arguments so that I can then more effectively participate in the never-ending project to create a new and more just world. My friends and fellow students have supported me, challenged me, and acted as a...

Favorite Class or Professor

This is a tough question. It would be a tie between Dr. Goudarzi's seminar "The Emergence of Islam: Contours and Controversies" and Dr. Stang's seminar "Neoplatonism." Dr. Goudarzi's class delved into the birth of Islam in the seventh century C.E. We explored questions surrounding the role of the Prophet Muhammad, the origins of the Qur'anic text, and the intellectual traditions of early Muslim communities. The course offered an in-depth discussion of these historiographic issues, allowing us to engage with early Islamic...
