Profile

Greg Given is a historian of the ancient Mediterranean world, with broad interests in the development of Christian literature and culture from the second to sixth centuries CE, as well as in the history of modern scholarship on this period. His current book project focuses on the various collections of letters attributed to the second-century martyr-bishop Ignatius of Antioch. Much of Given’s research focuses on late ancient Coptic texts and manuscripts, and this research has been published in such venues as the Journal of Early Christian Studies, Journal of Coptic Studies, Archiv für Religionsgeschichte, and Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses. In addition to offering other courses at HDS, Given has previously taught at the University of Virginia, University of Mary Washington, Stonehill College, and Yale Divinity School. He also currently serves as Preceptor in Expository Writing in the Harvard College Writing Program.
