Profile

Rabbi Elisabeth ("Liza") Stern is Counselor to Jewish Students at Harvard Divinity School. A graduate of Vassar College, she was ordained from Hebrew Union College’s Rabbinic School in 1984. She served as a congregational rabbi in Dallas, Texas for a dozen years before moving back to Newton with her husband, Rabbi Keith Stern, and their five children. Currently, Rabbi Liza is the rabbi of Congregation Eitz Chayim in Cambridge.

In addition to congregational work, she was chaplain at Solomon Schechter in Dallas; adjunct faculty at Brandeis’s Hornstein Program, rabbinic faculty to STAR (Synagogue Transformation and Renewal), and mentor and field supervisor for HUC Rabbinic students. Currently, Rabbi Stern also serves as the Jewish chaplain/chaplaincy director for the Department of Spiritual and Religious Life at Brandeis University. 

Rabbi Liza has served as co-chair of the Women’s Rabbinic Network and as interim rabbi at local synagogues. She has also served on numerous directing boards in the community, and is currently on the board of Boston Area Gleaners. She raises chickens and bees and is an avid skier and retired hockey player.
