Swartz Hall Update—August 9, 2019

We’re in the thick of summer and we’re in the thick of demolition as well.

Inside and around Swartz Hall, crews continue to be busy with demolition and abatement work. Demolition work is not typically like what’s depicted on reality home-improvement shows. Safe and efficient demolition requires careful planning, lots of coordination, and oftentimes methodical work.

A lot of progress has been made on the ground floor of Swartz Hall. Crews were in there this week knocking down steel framing and carefully cutting through thick telecommunication wiring. There has also been a lot of preparation work on the upper floors of Swartz Hall where walls have been marked for demolition and steps have been taken to protect features like woodwork and stairways that will remain.

Below I’ve included some pictures of the demolition and preparation work in progress so you can get a sense of how it’s proceeding.

Site work. Coming up next week, installation of temporary power to the site is expected to conclude. Also expected on site soon is a crane that will be in place in the Francis Avenue parking lot. All activities are subject to change based on weather or other circumstances.
