Swartz Hall Update—December 6, 2019

In recent weeks on this blog I’ve talked about our focus on healthy materials and our historical character preservation. In this post I wanted to share some images and offer an update on the progress that’s been made within and around Swartz Hall.

Nearly all of the interior of the old stack wing has been cleared out in preparation for the extensive renewal. This is where the new multifaith space will be located, in addition to other classroom and office space. Demolition in this part of the building (seen in the images below) has included the removal of the slab floor, concrete columns, and steel beams.

Meanwhile, crews have been busy preparing the footprint for the addition that will contain the new café and commons area, flexible classroom and event space, and meeting areas. This work included lots of excavation, and more recently, the installation of rebar and the pouring of multiple concrete footings on which the addition structure will be built. This process can be seen in the images below.

The ground level of Swartz Hall has been emptied as well in order to remake the space so that, when complete, it is more welcoming, accessible, and modern. Demolition continues in that area of the building and is nearing completion, as you can see below.

We’re only six months into the Swartz Hall construction project, and it’s amazing to see the progress that’s already been made to renew this century-old building. I’m excited to see what the next few months bring as the School’s main campus building starts to take shape as a true campus center.

Site work. Steel installation at the chimney will begin soon. Crews will continue to dewater and excavate the courtyard, as well as conduct foundation work, in preparation for the building addition. Demolition of the mechanical area in the Swartz Hall tower mechanical room continues. Dumpster swaps are ongoing. All activities are subject to change based on weather or other circumstances.
