On March 10, 2022, Harvard Divinity School Dean David N. Hempton announced enhancements to the School’s awarding of financial aid beginning in the 2022-23 academic year. The following message was sent from Dean Hempton to the HDS community.

Dear members of the HDS community,

I am writing to share good news about enhancements to the School’s financial aid packages.

We have been working for the last several months to strengthen our financial aid offerings in both our merit and need-based aid programs with a focus on increasing stipend support.

I am pleased to announce that beginning in academic year 2022-23, HDS will increase our stipend amounts for continuing and incoming students who receive a stipend as part of their aid package. The stipend increases will apply to our merit and need-based programs.

I urge you to read an interview with Tim Whelsky, Associate Dean for Enrollment and Student Services, and Beth Flaherty, HDS’s director of financial aid, who offer more details of the enhancements.

Student financial aid has been and continues to be a priority for Harvard Divinity School. HDS already has a generous financial aid structure in place, with about 90 percent of our students receiving merit or need-based aid, and any student who qualifies for need-based aid receiving a grant that covers at least 75 percent of their tuition. This latest increase in vital financial support will enhance both our merit and need-based offerings and ensure an HDS education is accessible to a greater number of students. Our commitment to investing in our students will open doors of opportunity and will serve to strengthen HDS overall.

With best wishes,
David N. Hempton
Dean of the Faculty of Divinity
