“Those who founded the nation’s first non-sectarian theological school in 1816 would be astounded by this gathering, which represents these ever-widening circles of inclusion.”

Harvard President Claudine Gay shared those words while addressing a crowd of nearly 200 Harvard Divinity School community members on Thursday during the School’s 208th Convocation. She pointed out that two centuries later, the School’s mission has evolved beyond “to quote early advocates, ‘the serious, impartial, and unbiased investigation of Christian truth’ to ‘a just world at peace across religious and cultural divides,’” noting that the student body now represents more than 40 different faith traditions—as well as those of no faith tradition.... US Official Calls Religious Intolerance in India 'Frightening'

"U.S. advocacy for religious freedom must be conflict-sensitive, so as not to render already vulnerable communities more vulnerable nor exacerbate religious dimensions of conflict," Susan Hayward, associate director of the Religious Literacy and the Professions Initiative, said while testifying before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations.

Sara Bleich, vice provost for special projects, stressed more localized efforts taking place within individual schools at Harvard to incorporate the Legacy of Slavery report and its recommendations. Harvard Divinity School has been holding a series of online public conversations, exploring religion and the legacies of slavery. “This type of work is so important,” Bleich said, “because for us to propel this work forward, we need to embed these activities in the DNA of the University.”

Interpreting Stories of Enslavement in the New Testament

On Monday, January 30, 2023, Harvard Divinity School hosted an event on the presence of enslavement in early Christian stories. The event was the first in a series of six public online conversations titled Religion and the Legacies of Slavery, which aims to build on the work of the 2022 Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery report. Following the event, Jude Ayua and Emily Chaudhari, both Master of Theological Studies degree candidates at HDS, sat down together to talk about it.
