Twenty-three years ago, the spring issue of Harvard Divinity Bulletin included the following announcement: "Henri J.M. Nouwen, a Dutch priest, theologian, psychologist, and noted author has accepted an appointment at HDS as Professor of Divinity and Horace De Y. Lentz Lecturer. The appointment begins with the 1983-84 academic year and will be on a halftime (spring only) basis to allow Nouwen to divide his time between the Divinity School and a theological center in Latin America." It was a seemingly mundane activity—the reading of a newspaper—which moved Gwen Moore, MDiv ’00, to make a fundamental shift in her life. In December 1995, Moore scanned The New York Times and noticed a cover story about economic development in China.
