How I've Changed

These last two years have taught me much about my heritage, character, and the critical life lesson of interpreting surrender as a form of strength instead of a form of quitting. For my Greek lineage, I grew deeper in my Greek Orthodox faith, taking a class at Hellenic College Holy Cross and modern Greek language lessons. For my Puerto Rican lineage, I researched the religious and state symbolism in the island's coat of arms, which ended with me at the CUNY Center for Puerto Rican Studies, learning about the federal interventions in Puerto Rico's democratic process while establishing the Commonwealth. I'm proud that I met the academic goals with which I started the program, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the unexpected lessons along the way.

Favorite Class or Professor

All my classes and professors taught me wonderful things, so it is hard to pick one! But if I’m ever at a dinner party and someone brings up Hegel, William James, John Dewey, Teresa de Ávila, Plato, Foucault, Nikos Kazantzakis, George Seferis or Judith Butler, I will be able to engage in the conversation instead of topping my plate with more hors d’oeuvres.

Message of Thanks

I’m grateful for everyone who believed in, mentored, and supported me through this challenging but rewarding journey. The HDS Communications team became a second family, with Caroline, my supervisor, being a comforting guide during my time in Cambridge. I also want to thank my late-night iHop crew that extended a caring ear over decaffeinated coffee and sugary pancakes.

What I Hope to Be Remembered By

I’d be shocked if I were remembered as I spent most (if not all) of my time studying. But if I’m remembered for something, I hope it’s that my brows had the structure and strength I lacked in my scholarship (I’m still a work in process).

Future Plans

I look forward to returning to my home, Puerto Rico, to apply the lessons learned in leading with a moral imagination and contribute to the conversation in the island’s upcoming election, specifically redefining the island’s relationship with the US. Stay tuned; it will be a bilingual campaign…
