Dear friends,

As the cover of this year’s report reminds us, Harvard Divinity School exists for teaching and learning, for students and their future impact on the world, and for the knowledge and insights that faculty generate through their scholarship. The cover also makes me think about the joy of Commencement, as well as the joy of new students arriving each year—the continual passing of the baton. This year, we also feel that joy in regard to the leadership of HDS.

Over the past year, we’ve been preparing for the next chapter of Harvard Divinity School while celebrating David Hempton’s deanship. We have so much to appreciate about his thoughtful direction, including his transformative global vision and the ways he and Louanne built community. Under David’s guidance, Harvard Divinity School has entered a new era of multireligious learning, teaching, and leading—with compelling opportunities to continue expanding multireligious education, ministry studies, and the public understanding of religion.
We are grateful for the continuation of great leadership. We are thankful for David Holland’s care as interim dean through the transition of the fall semester. And we are excited to welcome Marla Frederick back to the University as the next dean of Harvard Divinity School starting in January.

As we look to the future, we are grateful for you, the alumni and friends who support and take part in this wonderful community. Your care and thoughtful guidance in the world and on behalf of HDS allow for the cycle of the School to continue, while expanding its impact. Your gifts bolster innovative programs and initiatives that help reimagine the study of religion. And your investments in the HDS Fund and resources for students—such as financial aid, field education, and internships—help shepherd the next generation of ethical leaders.
All of you—through your time and through your gifts—make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students, faculty, community, and, ultimately, the world. Thank you for being a part of the story of Harvard Divinity School. We are immensely grateful to be a part of yours.

With gratitude,
Lori Stevens
